(We had a mutual friend in Glasgow, and that made the connection easy.) Not long after, Seamus visited me in Scotland, reading to a group of students I’d drawn together. I went to see him in Dublin and got to know his wife, Marie, and his young children. Our visits, though never frequent, continued over the next four decades. Only recently, he came to stay with me at my Vermont farmhouse.
